New Books
Project 2025: Unmasking the threat to American Democracy by Taylor Reed. Project 2025, spearheaded by the Heritage Foundation, represents a conservative agenda with far-reaching implications. This initiative aims to overhaul the current political ideology, pushing for substantial deregulation and reduced government intervention. However, these changes often disproportionately impact marginalized communities, exacerbating inequalities in healthcare and civil rights.
Nightshade by Michael Connelly. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Detective Stilwell has been “exiled” to a low-key post policing rustic Catalina Island, after department politics drove him off a homicide desk on the mainland. But while following up the usual drunk-and-disorderlies and petty thefts that come with his new territory, Detective Stilwell gets a report of a body found wrapped in plastic and weighed down at the bottom of the harbor. Crossing all lines of protocol and jurisdiction, he starts doggedly working the case. Soon, his investigation uncovers closely guarded secrets and a dark heart to the serene island that was meant to be his escape from the evils of the big city.
Return to Sender: Longmire-21 by Craig Johnson. Fans of the series will love seeing Walt put into this almost impossible situation, and new fans will fall for the venerable sheriff as he tries to uphold the law and his own values in this high-stakes mystery.
Summer Light on Nantucket by Nancy Thayer. Blythe Benedict is content. Her life didn’t end when her marriage did. In fact, she’s more than happy living in her comfortable house in Boston, working as a middle school teacher, and raising four wonderful children. With three of her kids in the throes of teenagerhood and one not too far behind them, Blythe has plenty of drama to keep her busy every single day. But no amount of that drama could change the family’s beloved annual summer trip to Nantucket.
A Thousand Distant Shores by Buck Turner. Before Ellie Spencer came to Sims Chapel and caught Jack Bennett’s eye, Sara Coffee had been the brightest star in his universe. Having grown up together, Sara and Jack were best friends, their bond as deep as the river that formed the lake where they spent countless summer days fishing and sharing dreams. But then Ellie Spencer happened, and everything changed.
Tough Luck by Sandra Dallas. After their mother dies, Haidie Richards and her younger brother, Boots, are put to work in an orphanage. Their father left four years earlier to find a gold mine in Colorado Territory, and since then he’s sent only three letters. Still, Haidie is certain that he is alive, has struck gold, and will soon send for them. But patience is not one of Haidie’s virtues and soon she and her brother make a break for it.
